Carolyn Creek Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

psychocyclist: Cache contents were destroyed due to flooding (either the container wasn't closed properly or the seal was damaged).

I arrived to find the cache itself sitting out in the open. It seems to have migrated from it's well covered spot below a pile of rocks to sitting on top of a pile of rocks in plain view. Rather than rehide it here, I have removed it and am archiving this listing.

This was a bold hide. The container was a large AMMO box, hidden in view of houses along a well travelled path. I was amazed and happy to see it last so long. There were 76 finds on this cache in 19 months. Thanks to everyone who visited!

Geocache Description:

A simple cache located in one of Mississauga's many pedestrian trails.

This cache is located near a path that follows Carolyn Creek. It is a popular path, so some stealth will be needed. Carolyn Creek runs on the south edge of the former Brittania Landfill Site. The site has 10 Million tonnes of waste, and was closed in 2002. Since then, BraeBen golf course was built on the site.

From the cache site, looking across the creek to the left, you can see part of the gas collection system that is used to generate 'green' energy from landfill gases. The gas collection systems were integrated at the time of golf course conversion, and extracts 2500 cubic feet per minute of landfill gas from 45 'wells' situated across the course. In conjunction with the nearby processing equipment, 5.5 MW of power is generated. This energy is used to operate the Lakeview Wastewater Treatment Facility. In addition, this system reduces CO2 emissions by over 250,000 tonnes per year.

Between energy collection, CO2 displacement, and golf, this site is considered to be a win-win-win result. Nonetheless, I wouldn't advise drinking the water from the nearby creek. ;)

The cache is a watertight 50 cal green ammo can. It started out with a collection of dollar store games.
