To get over it, myself and a few like-minded chums, as well as
hundreds of others, descend on Cromford on Boxing day to blow the
cobwebs away and detox (even if for only a few hours) by watching
the raft race on the River Derwent. The cache is placed on the
route that many use to watch the raft race. I did try to place this
on Boxing day but it was far too busy.
The trackway, known locally as Church Walk, was a private
driveway made for the use of the Arkwright family, and followed the
line of an old pathway. It emerges through cast iron gates set
between stone gateposts on to the A6. A gatehouse once stood here
tucked under the cliff face. The cliffs are a favourite spot for
rock climbers.
The cache is a
slightly smaller than a sandwich box, has a log, a pen and a few
small swaps.
This is a cracking place to visit on days other than boxing day.
You can visit Scarthin Books in Cromford itself, Arkwright's mill,
walk up the canal to High Peak Junction or indulge in retail
therapy at Masson Mills.
Enjoy - can be muggle-tastic on Sundays. Dog walkers etc.
