Geocache Description:

Nairobi National Museum Multi  #1: Sculptures & Stuff

Note: the given coordinates are for Step 1

This is one of three multi-caches now available at this fine location. They are privileged to join Carbon Hunter’s excellent Earth Cache, Nairobi’s Earliest Residents GC278EH, which is so far easily the most popular/found cache in Kenya. So now you also have three caching reasons to visit the museum!

The Nairobi Museum was built in 1929 and is the flagship museum for the National Museums of Kenya, housing celebrated collections of Kenya's History, Nature, Culture and Contemporary Art. Amongst the numerous attractions there is a notable gallery of artwork by Joy Adamson featuring various Kenyan communities in traditional attire and Kenyan plants & flowers, a comprehensive collection of over 900 stuffed birds and animals, fascinating exhibits on hominids & dinosaurs and some great dioramas. See here for more historical background and other information. It is open daily throughout the year from 08h30-17h30. See the gallery photo for info on entry fees.

Whilst most visitors quite rightly spend their time admiring the wonderful exhibits inside, many do not take the opportunity to explore the museum environs which are well worth the extra hour or so required. The museum is set in beautiful botanical gardens which offer a serene, shady environment with some fine tree specimens.

This short multi takes you from the entrance towards the northern edge of the gardens passing several items of interest along the way. I had hoped to hide a larger cache but was unable to find a suitably secure spot given the high muggle factor in this area. So you will have to make do with a micro . . . :)

To Reach the Museum:

This is not as straightforward as in the past as there is now a new dual-carriageway flyover which continues past the Museum entrance. So if coming from the city you will need to filter left as you approach the flyover junction, follow the loop around and across the highway (ie. effectively making a right turn) and then along Museum Hill passing the Museum entrance on the other side of the dual carriageway.

Continue down to the next roundabout then go around this and come back the same way but now on the other side of the dual carriageway where you can access the Museum entrance on your left.

   To Find the Cache

    1. After parking your car head for S01 16.427 E36 48.855 where you will a plaque describing the huge creature towering above it. Although much of the text has worn off, you will see that there are A lines of text

    2. Now go to S01 16.442 E36 48.863 where you will find another fine piece of art. The number of fishes found at the bottom right front of this = B

    3. Now proceed down the steps and into the garden passing the amphitheatre then heading right for S01 16.448 E36 48.820 where you will find an information board about a Forgotten Flower. 14C genera of this type of plant are indigenous to Kenya.

    4. Close by is a small plaque placed by the Hon NK Ngala on African Refugee Day in 200D

    5. Move on a little further to S01 16.434 E36 48.815 where you will find another information board about Useful Trees. Find the unit used to measure wood which = 12E cubic feet

    6. Close by here is another small plaque commemorating the planting of a special tree. The alphanumeric value (A=1, B=2, C=3, etc) of the last letter of the 5-letter KiSwahili name of this tree = F

Now it is time to locate the cache which can be found at:

S01 16.(Cx2)(A-3)(B+3) E36 48.(F+2)(E-1)(D+5)
