Spindletop is what put Beaumont and the Texas economy on the map when oil was discovered there on January 10, 1901. Nicknamed the “Lucas Gusher,” the gusher spewed 100,00 barrels of oil for nine days straight, reaching a record height of 100 feet. Beaumont's population ballooned from 10,000 to 50,000 virtually overnight with over 500 Texas corporations doing business in Beaumont in 1902.
On the National Register of Historic Places, wander through the recreated boomtown, which is about a mile from the actual site. Meander through building after building and imagine what life must’ve been like in a rough and tumble Old West town. Visit the barber shop, where the chairs were rented out nightly as sleeping quarters during the housing shortage, and peek inside the ice cream shop, which doubled as the medical office (a less than fun surprise for the kiddos). Go back in time to prohibition days in the saloon and marvel at the old cameras and printing presses. Replica gushers are set off a few times a month and events throughout the year feature reenactors and costumed characters so be sure to check their schedule before you visit!
