Geocache Description:

This is a Gothic Revival church built of handmade bricks in 1860 and designed with a separate galley for servants. It was the last church consecrated by Bishop Leonides Polk in 1861 before he resigned and became a major-general in the Confederate army. He was later killed at Pine Mountain, Georgia in 1864. It is the oldest church building in continuous use in south Rapides Parish.

Before the church was built it was a cemetery with the earliest marked grave of Josephine Ellen Johnson who died in 1835 at 19 months, 4 days. Many prominent people of the area are buried here including Mary McCoy who was mentioned in Soloman Northup's "Twelve Years a Slave" autobiography. Also buried here in Ralph Smith Smith who built the first railroad west of the Mississippi River in 1837. This site has a marker stating 16 on the Cheneyville Tour.

Please limit your search to daylight hours, and beware of muggles as this is an area along road and therefore public view.
