Geocache Description:

Located at the site of a Old Catholic chuch that was built in 1844. The cache is a small notepad in a pill bottle. Please make sure you have your own pencil.

This cache is located in the historic mining town of New Diggings. The cache is outside the church. Please be extra respectful and careful when searching for this cache. This is the only remaining wooden church that Father Samuel Mazzuchelli built. St. Augustine's Church pre-dates Wisconsin statehood. This weather-beaten Greco-Gothic church has withstood the battering of time. It is now being restored by the Father Mazzuchelli Assembly of the Knights of Columbus of Lancaster, Wisconsin. The church boasts a Meneely bell, a very desirable bell of the time. The Meneely foundry in West Troy, NY was one of the most significant bell foundries in the New World. At first glance, the church appears to be a stone or brick building. Upon closer look, you'll see that the Father had the wood carved to have the appearance of a grand church. It is actually an all wood exterior. Everything stands just as it did when Father Mazzuchelli gave mass, from the imported Italian sculptures, to the stained glass windows. The parish never needed to increase seating since the people vacated New Diggings. The church holds an annual mass on the last Sunday of September at 2:30 p.m. Followed by a steak dinner fundraiser with silent auction and raffles. From May 31 to Sept. 31, St. Augustine's is open on Sundays from 1 -4 p.m. or by appointment by calling (608)744-3438 or 854-2396.
