Almost Amazing Traditional Geocache

12-12-12: Original cache container has been replaced with a new (and hopefully) hurricane-proof one. Small cache holds log and pen, maybe one or two very small items.
Season 18 of the Amazing Race held its finale here in the Florida Keys. During one leg, the finalists had to wade through shallow seas out to Horseshoe Island and find the tallest tree to get their next clue. Of course, our first thought was “what a great place for a geocache!” Problem was, even though we live in the neighborhood where the race took place, we found that none of our friends had ever heard of Horseshoe Island. They told us of the Horseshoe Keys, but they certainly weren’t within walking distance! We went to the park service and folks there, too, were curious about where this island could be. They helped us search on a detailed map of the area and together we found a spit of land that was very definitely horseshoe-shaped. We went to check it out. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the right spot. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a cool spot to find! We hope you have fun finding it and finding our “Almost Amazing” cache.
The cache is, generally, easy to access though there may be moments at high tide or after a storm where wading is required. You will also need to watch out for muggles. Do replace the lid firmly to help us try and keep the cache dry.
As for THE Horseshoe Island—yes, it does exist and we did eventually discover where. But the access is not public unless you go in by boat and we couldn’t get permission for a geocache there.
