Dne 12. září 2015 byl po desetiletém úsilí pana Vladímíra Vopáleckého (synovce letce kpt. Josefa Vopáleckého, který sloužil v Britském královském letectvu - RAF - u 310. Československé stíhací perutě a 68. noční stíhací perutě a zapojil se do bitvy o Británii) v Českých Budějovicích odhalen Pomník českým letcům (já doufám, že i Slovenským) bojujících v řadách britské RAF za 2. světové války. Pomník vznikl, protože máme nesplatitelný dluh vůči těmto našim válečným letcům, kteří bojovali za naší vlast, často i padli a někteří bohužel nemají ani vlastní hroby (pád do moře, neznámé místo nehody, apod.) Nesmíme na ně nikdy zapomenout a to je hlavní důvod, proč stojí na Senovážném náměstí tento pomník. Je zasvěcen všem, co měli odvahu odejít od svých rodin a jít bojovat do neznáma za svobodu. Bylo jich přibližně na 2 500 a z toho jich na 500 položilo svoje životy.

Pomník představuje sklolaminátový model anglické válečné stíhačky Spitfire Mk.IX s ulomeným křídlem. „Jde o model vojenského letadla, s nímž létal i plukovník Milan Malý, pilot čs. 312. stíhací perutě RAF, který se instalace bohužel nedožil," připomněl organizátor výstavby pomníku veterána z Českých Budějovic, zesnulého 1.5.2013.

Kamenný podstavec s upevněným modelem stíhačky Spitfire nese desku se čtyřmi jmény mladíků z Českých Budějovic, kteří zahynuli ve stíhačkách. U pomníku je zalitý v betonu duralový úlomek letadla, se kterým havaroval 14. září 1940 František Marek. Byl vůbec prvním Budějčákem, který ve věku 27 let zahynul v bitvě o Británii při nehodě u Horndon on the Hill. Ke stíhačce vede betonový chodníček s reliéfy osmi letadel, na kterých tehdy Češi nejčastěji létali. Má představovat ranvej.

Cesta ke vzniku pomníku nebyla vůbec jednoduchá. Zpočátku se nápadu pana Vopáleckého ujalo město a nechalo na stavbu vyhlásit architektonickou soutěž. Nápady ale sklouzávaly do abstraktních podob, které se nelíbili některým historikům a veteránům a proto ho odmítli. Původně tedy měl na náměstí stát jiný pomník. Po neúspěšné soutěži na podobu památníku založila skupinka nadšenců občanské sdružení Za výstavbu pomníku českým letcům RAF. Tvoříli ho čtyři důchodci. V roce 2010 se jim podařilo od města pronajmout pozemek před poštou a tak zbývalo vyřešit tradiční ČESKÝ problém – peníze. Nakonec by se pomník měl honosit označením „národ sobě“ – zatímco lidé a sami váleční veteráni ve vysokém důchodovém věku peníze dávali, úřady nebo velké podniky, které autoři oslovili, na památku hrdinů přispět nechtěli. Sami dárci podotkli, že dělají něco, co měl už dávno učinit někdo jiný. „Je nám líto, že stát na takové osobnosti a hrdiny zapomíná,“ poznamenal Pavel Jim Drengubák ze skupiny Nezmaři, který vystoupil, mimo dalších, na jednom z benefičních koncertů, při kterých se vybírali peníze na stavbu tohoto pomníku.

Nakonec organizátoři výstavby pomníku uspěli s pomocí těchto darů od dobrovolníků a také úsporných nákladům. Ušetřili například na modelu letadla, který měl být původně z bronzu, teď je ze sklolaminátu, což určitě nesnižuje jeho vzpomínkovou hodnotu.

V pozadí za pomníkem je budova pošty, která je s válečnou historií také spojena. V budově najdeme pamětní desku se jmény zaměstnanců, kteří byli zapojeni do odbojové organizace poštovních zaměstnanců a bohužel také položili své životy.

Nedaleko od pomníku v Široké ulici na domě č.p. 11 (N 48° 58.386' E 014° 28.501') najdete pamětní desku plk. Jiřího Maňáka, letce z Českých Budějovic, jednoho ze tří Čechoslováků, kteří veleli britské peruti RAF, jediného čs. pilota letounů Hawker Typhoon, nositele DFC – Záslužný letecký kříž, za odvážný čin nebo činy, hrdinství, odvahu a statečnost nebo příkladnou službu ve vzdušných operacích proti nepříteli.

At the monument is embedded in concrete duralumin aircraft fragment, with which crashed 14 September 1940 František Marek. He was the first Budweiser to die at the age of 27 in the Battle of Britain in an accident at Horndon on the Hill. To the fighter leads concrete pavement with reliefs of eight planes, on which the Czechs most often flew. It's supposed to be a runway.

The way to the monument was not easy at all. Initially, the city took the idea of Mr. Vopálecký and had the architectural competition announced. But ideas slipped into abstract forms that some historians and veterans did not like and therefore rejected it. Originally, there was to be another monument on the square. After an unsuccessful competition for the design of the memorial, a group of enthusiasts founded the civic association For the construction of a memorial to Czech RAF pilots. It consisted of four pensioners. In 2010, they managed to rent land from the city in front of the post office, leaving the traditional Czech problem - money. In the end, the monument should boast the name "nation itself" - while people and war veterans themselves gave money, the authorities or large businesses that the authors addressed did not want to contribute in memory of the heroes. The donors themselves said they were doing something someone else had long done. "We are sorry that the state forgets such personalities and heroes," noted Pavel Jim Drengubák from the Nezmaři group, who performed, among others, at one of the benefit concerts, during which money was raised for the construction of this monument. Eventually, the organizers of the monument building succeeded with these donations from volunteers and also cost-effective. For example, they spared a model aircraft that was originally to be made of bronze, now it is made of fiberglass, which certainly does not reduce its memorial value.

In the background behind the monument is the post office building, which is also associated with war history. In the building we find a memorial plaque with the names of employees who were involved in the resistance organization of postal employees and unfortunately also gave their lives.

Not far from the monument in Široká Street on the house no. 11 (N 48 ° 58.386 'E 014 ° 28.501') find a plaque commemorative col.
