Here's an ammo can placed smack in the middle of an area burned to a crisp during the May 2008 wildfires that tore through south Brevard.
I placed this cache within a section of Jordan Scrub Sanctuary to give folks an idea of how Florida habitats are adapted to fire. Over a few days in May 2008, a series of wildfires burned through much of south Brevard, scorched natural areas, and destroying many homes.
Brevard Environmentally Endangered (EEL) Program lands in the Jordan Scrub had been managed previously with prescribed fire. When the wildfires hit the sanctuary boundary, they stopped, as there was very little fuel to burn. The location where the cache is located was not under EEL management at the time, and burned completely. When it was over, there was nothing but ash, palmetto stumps and scorched pine trees. When you're out here, take a moment to notice how the vegetation has rebounded.
You can park at the north entrance at the end of Marie Street. There is a 'No Trespassing' sign along the road; it refers to the property to the east. (It is improperly placed - long story.) You will not have any issues driving on the road or leaving your car there. Just don't block the gate. You can also park behind Harris off US1.
The ammo can was decorated at a CITO event we held to clean up after the fire - http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=a098a682-4262-42a6-b782-1bd12fac9dcd
