Geocache Description:

Nice Countryside. Cache is close to ancient graveyard. A very historic and peaceful place. Please respect the environment. The cache is in fair distance to the holy grounds.

The box is qite big and takes loads of stuff and coins.

Close to the old graveyard of St. Nikolaus in beautyful Himmelgeist (anno 904) are some very old trees. Here we found the perfect environment for our cache.

The small village on the Rhine is a perfect destination for a weekend-trip.

Die beständige Gottesburg.

St. Nikolaus ist der Patron der Schiffer und gehört zu den Heiligen, unter deren Schutz sich die Anwohner des großen Stromes gerne stellen. Das Hochwasser ist eine ständige Bedrohung des Ortes. Noch 1995 drang das Wasser des Rheins in die Pfarrkirche ein.

Unser Gotteshaus gehört zu den ältesten Stätten des Christentums in unserer Gegend. Aus der Urkunde von 904 kann entnommen werden, daß sich in Himmelgeist eine Filialkirche für Geistliche der Abtei Kaiserswerth befand. Das jetzige Gotteshaus wurde im 11. Jahrhundert als dreischiffige Pfeilerbasilika mit 3 Apsiden erbaut
