Two projects will be occurring around the park:
- Longmire: Meet at 9:00am at the Longmire Stewardship Campground at the marked coordinates for campground maintenance projects. For those of you who have attended recent "CITO the Mountain" events in May or June, you'll recognize some of the work: we will be setting up three additional platform tents to be used by a volunteer group arriving at the park on August 26th, and scattering storm debris in the forests surrounding the campground.
- Paradise: Meet at 9:00am at the Muir staircase next to the Jackson Visitor Center, at the Paradise waypoint coordinates, for a trail brushing project.
To claim credit for your CITO, simply sign in as a volunteer at either of these events on August 25th, then log your experience and photos here on the cache page! OR volunteer for any other project in the national park through the following Sunday (August 28) and you can still claim credit! Here's another option, if you can't make it to the Centennial Day events:
- Sunrise: Join a trail maintenance project led by the Washington Trails Association on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, August 26, 27, or 28! Sign up online here!
Mount Rainier has many volunteer opportunities throughout the park in addition to the three listed above. For more information, visit the National Park's volunteer program page, volunteer blog, or volunteer Facebook page. If you are already a Mount Rainier volunteer and will be working in the park on August 25, you qualify for this CITO as well -- just log your accomplishments here.
Each project will last about four hours, though work will continue later for those who wish to do so. All three projects are suitable for all age groups. Whatever project you work on, plan to bring good footwear, food, and layered clothing. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also recommended, especially at Paradise and Sunrise. If you have well-fitting gloves, bring them along; we'll provide them, but your own usually fit better! Projects will continue regardless of weather. Here's a link to a current weather forecast for the Mountain. There will be no entrance fee to Mount Rainier on August 25 due to the Centennial Celebration.
During your visit, take advantage of the many geocaches in and around Mount Rainier, including Earth Caches and virtuals inside the park boundaries, and the Visit Rainier Centennial GeoTour, which currently has 75 geocaches scattered in and around the park! Mount Rainier is also a participant in the Find Your Park GeoTour.
We look forward to having you on board to share our celebration of 100 years of stewardship by the National Park Service in partnership with volunteers like you, and to kick off our next century of protecting our natural and cultural heritage!
