On top of Bastuberget there is a hole which was formed in the bedrock by erosion and dates to the preglacial period before the last Ice Age. The almost round and vertical hole is rather wide and deep and not a pleasant place to stumble into in a dark night on your way home from a pub! It was formed in partly fine-grained and partly pegmatic granite. In Finland we have only a few similar holes, which are dated to pre-Ice Age time. By the time they were formed, the climate was different from today. In a warm and humid climate chemical erosion was effective.
In order to log this cache, you have to send owner answers to the following questions:
- What is the geological name for this kind of hole?
- This type of hole is much more rare than giant's kettles. How does it differ from a giant's kettle (time and mechanism of formation)? If you have seen giant's kettles, you should be able to tell at least one difference in physical appearance.
- Estimate volume of the hole.
- Describe what kind of a man made construction is attached to the site OR take a picture of yourself with the hole showing and send it to the owner. NOTE. Do not place the picture with your log!
When you have sent the answers you can log the cache. If there is need for more clarification, the owner will contact you.
Bastubergetin laella oleva kolo on rapautunut kallioperään viimeistä jääkautta edeltäneellä, preglasiaalisella, ajalla. Se on lähes pyöreä ja pystysuora melko leveä ja syvä onkalo, joka on muodostunut osittain hienorakeiseen ja osittain pegmatiittiseen, rakoilleeseen graniittiin. Siihen ei olisi mukava kompastua pimeänä yönä kotimatkalla pubista! Maassamme tunnetaan vain muutamia vastaavia jääkautta edeltävältä ajalta peräisin olevia onkaloita. Ilmasto oli tuolloin erilainen kuin nykyään, ja lämmössä ja kosteassa kemiallinen rapautuminen oli tehokasta.
Voidaksesi logata kätkön lähetä omistajalle vastaus seuraaviin kysymyksiin:
- Millä geologisella nimellä kutsutaan tällaista koloa?
- Tällainen kolo on paljon harvinaisempi kuin hiidenkirnu. Miten se eroaa hiidenkirnusta (muodostumisen ajankohta ja mekanismi)? Jos olet nähnyt hiidenkirnuja, osaat varmaankin osoittaa ainakin yhden eron myös ulkonäössä.
- Arvioi kolon tilavuus.
- Kuvaile, millainen rakennelma on kolon lähellä, TAI ota itsestäsi valokuva, jossa näkyy myös kolo, ja lähetä se omistajalle. HUOM. Älä liitä kuvaa logiisi!
