I was caching with QWERTY recently and the topic of this cache came
up in conversation. He then made an astute observation: Of all
the native and ethnic arts we are familiar with, the story-telling
represented in recent Hmong Needlework leaves little to the imagination.
If the story is one of being held at gunpoint, then that is exactly
what is depicted in their needlework. This style of representing
events came about as a direct result of Hmong women switching form
the traditional style of needlework, that was pattern based, to
this new style of detailing an account of their lives in
concentration camps during the Vietnam era in an attempt to
preserve it. You can truly appreciate the harrowing journey this
misunderstood segment of our population has taken throughout
history by studying this needlework enlargement for even a short
period of time.
This cache is meant to give you some insights into their struggle, their culture and their daily lives that we may understand our Hmong neighbors
a little bit better.
The coordinates will bring you to a mural (rendering of an actual
quilt) on the exterior of the Hmong-American Partnership center in
Appleton. You can either answer the questions about the mural,
which is Solve A, or you can answer the questions about their
history and culture which is Solve B.
Solve A mural questions:
