Geocache Description:

This cache was placed by the Schuylkill Scribe who originally participated in the geo-experience for the purpose of writing a story for the Pottsville Republican newspaper. If you have one, bring your doggie. Cache consultation provided by Schneeberg Wasserman.

Hunt for the News Hound will take you from Route 61 at Port Clinton, to the beautiful and historically interesting Blue Mountain & Reading Railroad parking lot, coordinates N40° 34.632, W076° 01.536. If you're lucky, the railroad station will be open and you can go see neat railroad stuff as well as find out about seasonal train rides.

From there you'll head to the Appalachian Trailhead across the railroad tracks. Please look both ways before crossing the train tracks! Once you're safely across the train tracks, search for the white AT blazes to proceed to your target destination. Along the way, there will be trail choices.

If the Blue Mountain & Reading Railroad parking lot is full you can always retrace your path out of that parking lot back to the road and hang a left, then proceed until you arrive at a playground parking lot. Resist the urge to follow your GPS in a literal direction from this parking area as you'd have to swim across the Schuylkill River to proceed with your hunt!

The cache placer would like you to consider bringing a safe doggie treat to leave in the cache for the next "rover" to find! The original cache included a nice bag of T-Bonz doggie treats, several Pottsville Republican Newspaper T-Shirts, pens, pencils, tablets, a Mountain Spirit CD and more!

When placing the cache we had a +/- of 21 feet on the GPS.

On the way to the cache it's almost all uphill, on the way back from the cache it's almost all downhill. The trail can be slippery when wet! You go from the parking lot area at about 341 feet above sea level, to the cache altiitude of 684 feet above sea level! Whew! The actual cache container is an ammo box. Bow-wow ... woof-woof ... have a great day!
