Old Man of the Mountain Mystery Cache
4MRnutz: Well, we’ve been working with the land owner to find a way for this one to stay, but it looks like their hands and ours are tied. So we regret to say this one has to be archived for now. This has been our favorite cache placement and it will be hard to top. But you never know, The Old Man might return somewhere! This area had everything we wanted in a spot for this story, and we are looking for another one that might work also. Thanks to everyone that found and logged this cache. Your logs were fun to read and let us know our efforts were appreciated. Your enjoyment of this cache has given us the incentive to find more interesting places, and come up with different types of hides. For those who found this cache and didn’t even post at least a “TFTC” log, I hope you enjoyed yourselves any way, even if you, for some reason don’t feel that our efforts were worthy of a basic geocaching courtesy.

There is an old tale handed down through generations, of an old man
that lived in these mountains once upon a time. This mountain man
was named Jebediah Springfield, for whom Springfield Township may
or may not be named after. As this story goes, Jebediah, was an old
coal miner, that was known to be a bit strange and not all that
friendly. Heck the old timers that still remember, him say, he was
mean enough to hunt a bear with a switch! Well one day Jebediah was
digging in his secret coal mine somewhere along the banks of Indian
Creek, when he supposedly struck gold! Rumors of this find flowed
up and down the Indian Creek valley, but no one ever saw old
Jebediah emerge from those hills again. Some people thought that,
either, he had been robbed and murdered for his gold by some local
thieves, or that maybe he moved to the big city of Connellsville to
spend his fortunes. Others say that the old mountain man just hid
his treasure in those mountains and died there all alone guarding
it from all that would come searching! This story may or may not be
true, but it makes for a great story to start your caching
adventure! The coordinates above will get you to the area where it
is suspected that Jebediah may have hidden his treasure in a cave.
Be sure to bring a flashlight and watch for critters of all kinds.
Also watch out for old Jebediah, it is rumored he may still be
around guarding his treasure. To get to the cache area, turn off of
route 711 onto Sandy Flat road. There is no sign for Sandy Flat
road, but the coords for the intersection are N40 00.846 W79
31.264. Follow Sandy Flat road to the parking area. You will be
able to walk on the old road until about 280 feet from the cache.
From there you will find one of the few deer trails that lead to an
outcropping of rocks. There are a couple of ways to the cache area,
and we have decided to let you choose your own way, but take some
time to explore this area. I have included a cool rock formation
that we called the amphitheater as a waypoint. The container for
this cache was designed and built by quantumwatch, so, if you have
found any of our caches before, you know you will need to figure
how to open it. Please print out the cache page, and use the hints
if you have trouble figuring it out. After you make your find,
please put everything back the way you found it for the next
adventurer to come along. We hope you enjoy this hunt and as
always, be safe out there!
