Geocache Description:

This cache is located where Union Navy gunboats and steamers crossed from the Mississippi River to Moon Lake. It is an easy "park and grab". The cache container has been changed to a mediun sized "lock & lock".

On February 3, 1863, the Union Army cut a hole in the Mississippi River levee south of Helena, Arkansas to enable Union gunboats and steamers to use Yazoo Pass to reach the Coldwater and Tallahatchie rivers. They planned to enter the Yazoo River and help with the Vicksburg Campaign but were turned back at Fort Pemberton where the Tallahatchie narrowed and flooded land permitted an approach by boat only. Because of the placement of Fort Pemberton the Union flotilla could not reach the Yazoo River to continue their mission. On April 5, 1863 the Federals turned back and returned up the Tallahatchie and Coldwater rivers to Yazoo Pass and the Mississipi River.

Congrats to jbailey & tm007 for FTF!
