Geocache Description:

Millions of tons of cargo are moved on the Columbia-Snake River Waterway. The Dalles Navigation Lock, built and operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers, is one of 8 locks that make it possible to travel 465 miles from the Pacific Ocean to Lewiston, Idaho. It takes about 39 million gallons of water to lift/lower tugboats and barges an average of 88 feet to pass the dam. View the lock as you hunt for this cache. It is located on the Washington side of the dam and can be accessed by SR 14. This cache has been placed with the approval of The Dalles Park Manager. Please respect all signage regarding roads and areas not open to the public. After finding "Locking Through", you may wish to go to the nearby The Dalles Dam Visitor Center. The visitor center is open seasonally, May through September. Please call to find out more about visiting hours, driving directions, and an up-to-date tour schedule: The Dalles Dam Ranger Office 541-506-8475 or The Dalles Dam Visitor Center 541-296-9778.
