Once upon a time, there were a half-dozen bars, a few liquor stores and a strip club in the tiny crossroads town of Arcade. Arcade was a destination of booze-thirsty University of Georgia students. Merchants in Arcade used to sell alcohol cheaper than stores in other places, mainly because the city rebated the sales tax, a practice that apparently stopped in the 1980s.
On Aug. 17, 2009, Arcade’s 100th birthday, the city dedicated a monument honoring the “brave men and women of the Armed Forces.” Located adjacent to the flagpole, the monument features five copper soldiers surrounded by six pillars dated with our countries conflict from World War I to the current war on terror.
