Satellite Beach's First is in a 10 inch long, 4 inch diameter dark
blue plastic cylinder with a white lid full of goodies for young
and old nature lovers and adventurers. It started with some soft
fishing lures (NO HOOKS PLEASE), toys, money from foreign lands,
and a couple of items for campers.
History of Samson's Island
Samson's Island was saved from the developers that have paved much
of Florida by the citizens and city government of Satellite Beach
in the 1980's. I helped stop the island from being sold to
developers and then served on the first committee of volunteers
that planned the park and began it's development. Over time,
volunteers have spent thousands of hours building trails, picnic
areas, and planting native trees, shrubs, and grasses. Walk around
the island and take care to avoid walking on areas marked
environmentally sensitive. Camping is permitted. See KayakGuide.com
for a map of the island and directions to where paddlers can launch
to access the park from Brevard County Oars and Paddles Park on
Banana River Drive just east of Mather's Bridge. There is a nice,
small beach landing on the south side of the island near the river.
Larger boats can dock on the south, east, and north sides of the
island.
