Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a series called the “Prairie Winds Adventure Trail” developed by volunteers of the Canadian Badlands Geocaching Association. Enjoy the hidden secrets of Southern Alberta by getting off the beaten trail to sites seldom visited, scenic views and historic sites and buildings. Prairies are not flat and there is a reason for calling our trail “Prairie Winds”.

There may be other caches in the area.

Welcome to “Grain Community Hall”. The original Grain School was built in 1912 at a different location and it was the largest of four schools in the area. It was used until 1943. The “new” Grain School was built at this location in 1953 and used as a school until 1966. It was also used for many other activities like wedding dances, Christmas gatherings and family reunions. In 1973 the newly formed Grain Agricultural Society and Community Club took over the land & building. There have been many renovations, improvements and additions over the years. Some of the more recent improvements include the addition of an outdoor riding arena and a modern kitchen.

One of the groups that offered their support to the community was the Hillsview Women’s Institute. Your neighbors & family were all that you had for support when you lived so far from a town or village. Formed in 1957, the Hillsview WI served the needs of the community until they disbanded in 2002 after 43 years of service. The AWI had members from both sides of the border and was part of the provincial organization of called Alberta Women’s Institute. Many members took the opportunity to attend conferences and meeting with members from other parts of the province and to bring back ideas to their own club.

The following information is from Alberta Women’s Institute – For Home and Country (visit link)

"One of the oldest voluntary associations for women in the Province of Alberta and a latter-day instance of the Mechanics Institutes (HTML PDF ) movement, the Women’s Institutes aimed at improving society through improving the individual. The objectives of the Women's Institutes are to help rural women acquire home management and leadership skills; strengthen communities through active involvement; and build mutually beneficial social networks.
The AWI’s primary goal in the early twentieth century was to provide emotional and intellectual support to the thousands of women who had settled in the new province of Alberta. Many of these women had no agricultural experience and were living many miles from other women, in primitive conditions on isolated farms. The Institutes provided an opportunity to meet with other women once each month.

The effects of the AWI on community life in Alberta are significant. As a non-sectarian, non-partisan organization, it was able to attract members from across the religious and political spectrum. Since AWI branches were organized in small communities, the members were able to identify local needs for social infrastructure. The organization soon became one of the most effective rural fund-raisers in the province for the establishment of libraries, hospitals, community halls, rest rooms, and cemeteries."
