American Gulch is located just off of the trail of the same name, part of the
Payson Area Trail System. Park at the undeveloped trailhead (see waypoint), then hike the road up the hill to the cache.
While you can hike straight to the cache (Admiral Nelson philosophy), I recommend hiking along the road until you reach the top of the shoulder, then head 'noreast' to the cache. The last part will be bushwacking through heavy undergrowth, with scrub oak, catclaws, and manzanita; long pants, long sleeves and a current tetanus shot are recommended.
The cache is hidden in Arizona fashion: look for a pinon pine very near the crest of the hill.
My favorite cache hide is the top of a hill with great views.
I found some interesting rocks very near the cache site: I don't know if they are authentic petroglyphs or the product of more recent human activity.
While small children probably could make the hike, you may want to bring some cheese to go along with their whine . I've put some trade items just for kids in to reward them for the effort.
