ROSSTOWN RAILWAY SERIES - Platform 625 Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

jupiterpearl: Checked today - Is at the Bus Stop so had to replace a few times
Been muggled again - not there - I've run out of micro caches so I think it time to archive this one even though I was proud of the research and naming of this one along the Bus Route - Rosstown trail.

Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the series of caches along the Rosstown Rail Trail that extends from Elsternwick to Oakleigh railway stations. There are 8 traditional and one Mystery cache at the other end of the line and this one is just down from "Take a ticket" multi-cache. There is also a Multicache in the middle of the series that incorporates the Mystery cache.

Destined never to be used but always a dream. William Murray Ross built the never to be used Rosstown Railway first in 1883 and then had to be redone in 1887-8 due to the shoddiness of the original build. It was to carry produce from his other failed venture in the area the sugar beet mill. ( the Northern Queensland Sugarcane industry would have probably ended its time anyway. ) There was a lot of concern from the market gardeners in the area that his mill would use all the water supply available in the area. The railway fell into disrepair quickly as did the sugar beet mill. Carnegie was known as Rosstown until the early 1900's but its namesake hotel still stands on Dandenong Road in Carnegie North. The railway would have been useful in today's age as it would have linked the Dandenong Line /go under the Frankston Line and eventually meet Sandringham Line at Elsternwick.

Mr. Ross would be pleased perhaps that the route of the Railway line is now followed by the Chadstone> Oakleigh > Elsternwick bus route 625 -stopping via Ormond station. It is the Ormond to Elsternwick route that mostly follows the route so this cache is devoted to the new form of transport along the route.

At the GZ you will find a familiar structure. This spot is just around the corner from this footpath plaque depicting the original Garden Vale Station on the Rosstown Railway line .

The Cache - this is a busy intersection with through traffic and school traffic not to mention the odd bus. The cache is a micro but placed so you have some cover but timing might be difficult as people do sit at the bus stops close by. You might sit at the bus stop to log and then time your replacement. Catch a bus if you need to but a bus goes to Sunshine from here - I don't think in Mr Ross's time a suburb like Sunshine was ever imagined. You can continue down to Elsternwick to the "Take a ticket "multi cache by bus, foot, bike or car.- or head the other direction towards Oakleigh. FTF goes to leafotwind.
