"Into the Wild" ir filma, ko režisējis Šons Penns 2007. gadā. Filmas sižets balstīts uz reāliem notikumiem, kas aprakstīti rakstnieka un publicista J. Krakauera grāmatā ar tādu pašu nosaukumu.
Stāsta varonis Kristofers Makkandless ir reāla persona — kāds ideālistiski noskaņots amerikāņu jauneklis, pārtikušas ģimenes atvase, kurš 24 gadu vecumā pēc studijām augstskolā atstāj savu nodrošināto ikdienu un dodas apceļot pasauli. Ziedojis visus savus ietaupījumus labdarībai, viņš divu gadu laikā ar stopiem šķērso Ziemeļameriku un nonāk Aļaskā, kur apmetas ceļa strādnieku pamestā vecā autobusā, tālu prom no civilizācijas. Sākotnēji viņam klājas labi, dabas veltes un medības nodrošina iztiku. Bet, kad pēc pāris mēnešiem viņš nolemj doties atpakaļ uz tuvāko apdzīvoto vietu, iepriekš šķērsotā, lietavās pārplūdusī upe ir nepārvarama, un stāsta varonis spiests atgriezties savā mītnē, kur pēc laika viņš mirst no bada un spēku izsīkuma.
Aizkustinošs ir kāds viņa ieraksts dienasgrāmatā, kas vēsta: “Īsta laime un prieks ir tikai tad, ja ir kāds, ar ko tajā dalīties”…
Kā jau tas daždien notiek, grāmata un filma iecēlusi Kristoferu Makkandlesu kulta personas statusā, un pamestais autobuss Aļaskas nekurienē, kurš tikai pavisam nesen aizvākts “uz drošu vietu”, bija kļuvis par svētceļojumu objektu.

Into the Wild is a movie, directed by Sean Penn in year 2007, based on the book of Jon Krakauer about the american wanderer Christopher McCandless.
The hero of the story is a real person, a 24-year-old idealist, who had a very comfortable middle-class suburban life and family, with good education and many opportunities. But instead he chose to give all his life savings to charity and embarked on a two-year hitchhiking odyssey that led him to Alaska and an abandoned bus deep in the northern wilderness. At first, he had a good time there, living "off the grid", picking up berries, fishing and hunting. After two months of loneliness, trying to return to the highway area, he was trapped by a raging river and forced back to the bus, where he spent his final days before death by starvation and exhaustion.
One of the most moving quotes left by him reads: “Happiness is only real when shared”...
The book and the film helped elevate the McCandless saga to the status of modern myth, and the old bus, recently removed from its site and driven to a “safe location” by Alaskan authorities, was a world destination for pilgrims.
