Geocache Description:

Park on the side of the road go thru the granite archway. If anyone nearby would like to replace this cache please let us know. It is a great area to visit.

Ernest Harold Baynes organized the Meriden Bird Club on December 7, 1910 in Meriden, New Hampshire. The club was the first of its kind in America. You will be greeted at the entrance by the "Meriden" Martin House first built by Otis V. Cutts, from designs furnished by Edward Howe Forbush, state ornithologist of Massachusetts. The original house was built from a large flour or sugar barrel and divided into three stories with space for four rooms on each. A porch ran completely around the barrel, under a peaked roof, then mounted on a pole twenty to thirty feet high. Keep an eye out for bird baths in the sanctuary. One from a Boulder weighing 1/2 ton, another is a real Shell from the Philippines and a bronze "Overcus" bird bath which is close to the stage at the center of a little glade surrounded by white pines. You may also find some others we didn't. Numerous bird houses are on trees through out the trails. Ferns are plentiful in the forest and maybe you will be lucky enough to spot the rare walking fern which once inhabited the area. The cache is in a green ammo box nested in a large pine tree, please sign the log book. Enjoy Note: go to http://homepage.fcgnetworks.net/plfdlib/merbird.htm and there is something else hidden in the area, check it out!
