(PT) Com a descoberta de carvão mineral, no final do século XVIII, a freguesia de São Pedro da Cova desenvolveu-se a partir de uma economia industrial, deixando para segundo plano a agricultura.
Desde logo se construíram e reconstruíram infra-estruturas de apoio à exploração mineira nesta zona, recorrendo-se à utilização de meios, técnicas e materiais mais sólidos e adequados à época para a construção dos vários edifícios dispersos por toda a freguesia: edifícios industriais, sociais e de habitação, mas também meios de transporte do minério para os locais de distribuição e/ou consumo.
De entre todas as infra-estruturas mineiras construídas na freguesia, ainda hoje, se destaca o antigo complexo mineiro, onde se centram os edifícios de tratamento e expedição de carvão. O complexo mineiro encontra-se a oeste da Serra de Valongo, na zona de Vale do Souto, numa área ainda rural, com algumas habitações envolventes, cuja maioria, pertenciam à Companhia das Minas de Carvão de São Pedro da Cova, empresa detentora da concessão mineira.
A hegemonia das minas de carvão de São Pedro da Cova termina em meados dos anos 50 do século XX. As medidas tomadas pela Companhia e pelo Estado não resolveram os problemas da empresa, vendo-se comprometida a encerrar portas em Março de 1970, essencialmente em virtude da competitividade de outros combustíveis (fuelóleo e petróleo); necessidade de novos investimentos tecnológicos devido à maior profundidade das camadas de carvão. O encerramento das minas colocou fim aos hábitos e vivências que estavam enraizados na população que se vê agora obrigada a dirigir-se para a cidade do Porto à procura de novo emprego.
Entre 1970/72, a Companhia das Minas de Carvão de São Pedro da Cova, manteve alguns operários para desmantelamento do complexo mineiro - o ferro, aço, chapa e madeira foram retirados e vendidos para gerar dinheiro. Esta acção ajudou ao aceleramento de degradação em que hoje se encontram todos os edifícios do complexo, para além do estado de abandono em que se encontra.
Criado em 1989, numa das antigas Casas da Malta, o Museu mineiro de São Pedro da Cova tem como missão a valorização, divulgação e dinamização do património geológico e mineiro de São Pedro da Cova. Se inicialmente constituiu um polo atrativo à comunidade local e nacional, ao longo do tempo foi diminuindo a sua capacidade de atrair público. Em 2008 foi aplicado um plano de dinamização do espaço, que teve início com a catalogação e inventariação dos objetos e a reorganização da exposição permanente, continuando com a realização de vários eventos: exposições temporárias; oficinas; formações; colóquios e palestras; concertos; entre outras.

(ENG) With the discovery of mineral coal, in the late 18th century, the parish of São Pedro da Cova developed from an industrial economy, leaving agriculture behind.
Construction and reconstruction of the mining support infrastructure in this area was started and reconstructed using the most solid and appropriate means, techniques and materials for the construction of the various buildings scattered throughout the parish: industrial, social buildings and housing, but also means of transportation of the ore to the distribution and / or consumption sites.
Among all the mining infrastructures built in the parish, still stands the former mining complex, where coal treatment and shipping buildings are centered. The mining complex is located to the west of the Serra de Valongo, in the Vale do Souto area, in a still rural area, with a few surrounding dwellings, most of which belonged to the Coal Mine Company of São Pedro da Cova, the company that holds the concession mining.
The hegemony of the coal mines of São Pedro da Cova ends in the mid 50's of the twentieth century. The measures taken by the Company and the State did not solve the problems of the company, being committed to close doors in March 1970, essentially due to the competitiveness of other fuels (fuel oil and oil); new technological investments due to the greater depth of the layers of coal. The closure of the mines put an end to the habits and experiences that were rooted in the population that is now forced to go to the city of Porto looking for a new job.
Between 1970/72, the Coal Mine Company of São Pedro da Cova, kept some workers to dismantle the mining complex - iron, steel, sheet and wood were withdrawn and sold to generate money. This action has helped accelerate the degradation in which today all the buildings of the complex are located, in addition to the state of abandonment in which it is.
Created in 1989, in one of the old Houses of Malta, the São Pedro da Cova Mining Museum has as its mission the valorization, dissemination and dynamization of the geological and mining heritage of São Pedro da Cova. If it initially constituted an attractive pole to the local and national community, over time it has diminished its capacity of attracting the public. In 2008, a space dynamization plan was implemented, which began with the cataloguing and inventorying of objects and the reorganization of the permanent exhibition, continuing with the realization of several events: temporary exhibitions; workshops; formations; colloquiums and lectures; concerts; among others.
