Geocache Description:

This cache is located in a friendly town. AGS = Andy Griffith Show. There will be several caches in this series. The show ran from 1960-1968. Mayberry is the fictional town in North Carolina in which the Andy Griffith Show depicts the day to day lives of its characters. Mayberry’s population varies from 2,000 to 5,360 over the course of the show. Mayberyy’s Main Street is dominated by All Souls Church at one end and the movie theater at the other. The courthouse and small shops line the street. Farms and scenic locations like Myer’s Lake, surround the community. Community events like pagents, concerts, picnics, carnivals, school reunions, and dances are often the backdrops against which the main characters are placed. Mayberry is a dry county; however, moonshiners are not uncommon. Crime is practically nonexistent in the last two color seasons when Sheriff Taylor manages the entire county without the assistance of a deputy. Actual communities on the show include Raleigh, a few hours’ drive from Mayberry, and Silver City. Fictional Mount Pilot is a fast paced metropolitan a few miles east of Mayberry. Minorities rarely appeared on the show. Only Rockne Tarkington had a speaking role as Opie’s football coach in a seventh season episode. Teenagers are largely absent in Mayberry until Opie becomes one himself. Even then there are no teen “hang outs” in town, such as malt shops, hamburger joints, or record shops. Religion was more than a minor thread in the show - a situation not typical of other sitcoms of that era. The Taylors attend All Souls Church, the only house of worship seen on the show. Aunt Bee sings in the choir, Opie yawns on the front pew, and Andy serves on the church’s finance committee. Clara plays the organ and Helen teaches Sunday School. Some Christian viewers feel the show has a moral backbone virtually unrivaled by other television sitcoms. The Andy Griffith Show has its origin in a February 1960 episode of The Danny Thomas Show in which Danny Williams (Danny Thomas) is arrested by Sheriff Andy Taylor for running a stop sign in Mayberry. Except for one brief scene in the street outside the courthouse at the beginning of the episode, the action takes place inside the courthouse with Danny spending most of his time sitting in a jail cell. The Andy Griffith Show debuted October 3, 1960. The black and white seasons of the show were from 1960 to 1965. In spite of its conservative family values, only 2 of the 17 main or recurring characters were married (Otis and Emmett). Among these 17 characters, married couples were seen together in less than 8% of the episodes. Only Andy Griffith, Ron Howard, Frances Bavier, Don Knotts, and Hope Summers appeared in all eight seasons. This cache is located in a friendly town also.
