Geocache Description:

f

This EarthCache is 3/3 on the subject of textures of igneous rocks.

What is texture in a rock?

The texture of a rock is the size, shape, and arrangement of the grains (for sedimentary rocks) or crystals (for igneous and metamorphic rocks).

Phaneritic texture

This texture describes a rock with large, easily visible, interlocking crystals of several minerals. The crystals are randomly distributed and not aligned in any consistent direction. A phaneritic texture is developed by the slow cooling and crystallisation of magma trapped within the Earth's crust and is characteristic of plutonic rocks.

In this case you are asked to examine a very common igneous rock that has three (3) main mineralogical components in terms of mineralogy. This will become aparent in the tasks you have to carry out to validate your FOUND.

Validating your FIND:

  1. Observe carefully and say how many different coloured minerals you can see besides the three main ones that are the focus of the next questions.
  2. What is the general colour of this rock? Choose from blue, grey, beige, purple.
  3. Which colour mineral is the smallest of the three?
  4. What is the average size of the light-coloured minerals?
  5. Take a photo of your nick written on a piece of paper such that the phaneritic rocks can also be seen in the background but such that there are no spoilers - mandatory task.

f2

Observa atentamente diz-me quais são as cores deles?

aThe most exciting way to learn about the Earth and its processes is to get into the outdoors and experience it first-hand. Visiting an Earthcache is a great outdoor activity the whole family can enjoy. An Earthcache is a special place that people can visit to learn about a unique geoscience feature or aspect of our Earth. Earthcaches include a set of educational notes and the details about where to find the location (latitude and longitude). Visitors to Earthcaches can see how our planet has been shaped by geological processes, how we manage the resources and how scientists gather evidence to learn about the Earth.
