De mijngeschiedenis van Limburg.
Toen André Dumont op 2 augustus 1901 in As steenkool ontdekte kon hij niet vermoeden dat meer dan 300000 mensen hun boterham verdienden in de Kempense steenkoolmijnen. Winterslag startte in 1917 tot 31 maart 1988 als eerste met kolenproductie, later volgden Beringen in 1922 tot 28 oktober 1989, Eisden 1923 tot 18 december 1987, Waterschei 1924 tot 10 september 1987, Zwartberg 1926 tot 1 oktober 1966, Zolder 1930 tot 30 september 1992, Hout-Halen 1930 -1964 fusie met Zolder.
De steenkoolmijnen moesten na de oorlog het symbool worden van de economische heropleving en Achilles Van Acker lanceerde de steenkolenslag met als aanzet de immigratie van duizenden Italiaanse, Griekse en Spaanse gastarbeiders. Op het hoogte punt van de mijnen in 1948 telden de mijnen 44000 mijnwerkers en werden in de jaren ’50 uitgeroepen tot ereburgers van het land.
Vanaf eind jaren ’50 raakte de steenkoolontginning in West Europa in diepe crisis door invoer van goedkope kool. Zolder en Hout-Halen fusioneerden in 1964, zwartberg ging dicht in januari 1964 met als “zwarte maandag 31 januari” toen er 2 doden vielen en Limburg balanceerde op de rand van een burgeroorlog. D e overige gingen samen in 1967 op in nv Kempense Steenkoolmijnen en werkten met staat steun.
In 1970 hebben wij de oliecrisis en dit bracht soelaas voor de mijnen. Maar 1n 1980 kelderden de olieprijzen en dit was de doodsteek en uitgerekend Thijl Ghijselinck, voorzitter van Shell Portugal, werd in de zomer van 1986 door de regering Martens-Gol aangetrokken om de klus te klaren. Met een enveloppe van 2,5 miljard euro moest hij de KS afbouwen. Eisden, Winterslag en Waterschei werd in 1988 stopgezet.
Het Westelijk bekken Beringen en Zolder stopte in 1992.
Symbolisch werd de laatste blok steenkool boven gehaald op 30 september 1992.
Bij de Ks gingen 18000 banen verloren en het “Toekomstcontract” lukte wonderwel maar vanaf 1990 verzande dit door politieke spanningen en immobilisme.

The mining history of Limburg:
When André Dumont on 2 August 1901 in As coal discovered, he did not suspect that more than 300,000 people could earn their living in the
coal mines of the Kempen. Winterslag started in 1917 until 31 March 1988 as the first coal production. Later Beringen followed in 1922 until
28 October 1989, Eisden in 1923 until 18 December 1987, Waterschei in1924 until 10 September 1987, Zwartberg in 1926 until 1 October
1966, Zolder in 1930 until 30 September 1992, Houthalen in 1930 -1964 merger with Zolder
After the war the coal mines had to be the symbol of economic recovery and Achilles Van Acker launched the coal battle with the start
of the immigration of thousands of Italian, Greek and Spanish immigrant workers. At the height of the mines in 1948, the mines counted 44,000 miners. In the 50’s these miners were proclaimed as honorary citizens of the country.
As from the late 50’s the coal exploitation in Western Europe fell in a deep crisis by importing cheap coal. Zolder and Houthalen merged in
1964, Zwartberg closed in January 1964 with 31 January as "Black Monday” when two people were killed and Limburg balanced on the
brink of civil war. The other mines merged in 1967 into “NV Kempense Steenkoolmijnen” (coal mines of the Kempen) and worked with state
support.
In 1970 we have the oil crisis and this brought relief for the mines. In 1980 the oil prices sank and that finished them off. In the summer of
1986 Thijl Ghijselinck, president of Shell Portugal, was selected by the government Martens-Gol to get the job done. He had to reduce the KS
with a budget of 2.5 billion euros. Eisden, Winterslag and Waterschei were closed down in 1988.
The Western basin Beringen and Zolder closed in 1992. Symbolically, the last block of coal was brought up on 30 September 1992.
The KS lost 18,000 jobs and the "Future Contract" succeeded perfectly.
But in 1990 it got bogged down by political tensions and paralysis.
Ambitious plans could not be realized.
