Geocache Description:

On the inside lid and logbook, look for a letter and number to plug into a formula for a puzzle cache (Bald Eagle).

The Black-capped Chickadee’s (Poecile atricapillus) black cap and bib; white cheeks; gray back, wings, and tail; and whitish underside with buffy sides are distinctive. Its habit of investigating people and everything else in its home territory, and quickness to discover bird feeders, make it one of the first birds most people learn. Chickadees may be found in any habitat that has trees or woody shrubs, from forests and woodlots to residential neighborhoods and parks, and sometimes weedy fields and cattail marshes. They use nest boxes (such as the one the cache is in), small natural cavities, or abandoned Downy Woodpecker cavities, and often excavate their own cavities. Nests can be at ground level to more than 65 feet high, but are usually between 5 and 25 feet high. They tend to excavate in dead snags or rotten branches, and often select alder or birch. In winter Black-capped Chickadees eat about half seeds, berries, and other plant matter, and half animal food (insects, spiders, suet, and sometimes fat and bits of meat from frozen carcasses). In spring, summer, and fall, insects, spiders, and other animal food make up 80-90 percent of their diet. At feeders they take mostly sunflower seeds, peanuts, suet, peanut butter, and mealworms. Adult chickadees are said to not migrate, but an adult I banded near Roscommon, MI was found dead in a suburb of Milwaukee, WI. They are very feisty birds. I have had them in hand during banding operations, and they fight the entire time, pecking at your fingers, and tugging on any hangnails you may have.

The container is a bird house like chickadees sometimes use, containing a log book and swag. You will need to bring your own writing instrument. The cache is on a dirt road that is not plowed during the winter, and ground zero may be wet at times. Remember to get the code off the lid or logbook for the Bald Eagle puzzle final.
