Geocache Description:

Short walk from parking at the Inn, or a boggy scramble from the layby!

As you drive up the A592 from Ullswater you can't help notice a large boulder on the right hand side a few yards from the road, which when silhouetted resembles a little church (kirk) - a conspicuous landmark from which the Kirkstone Pass derives its name. Check out the initials carved into the rock..... no he wouldn't !! Wordsworth wrote about it in The Pass of Kirkstone: “--and yon, whose church-like frame Gives to this savage Pass its name. Aspiring Road! that lov'st to hide Thy daring in a vapoury bourn...” Kirkstone Pass at an altitude of 1,489 feet is the Lake District's highest pass open to motor traffic, and connects Ambleside in the Rothay Valley to Patterdale in the Ullswater valley.
