Ely was first named Florence, and when findind our that another town in Minnesota was already called Florence, the name was changed to Ely. There are several versions of who "Ely" was- but the most often told is that it is named after Samuel B Ely, a miner from Michigan who never set foot in the town. Earlier, it was named "Que Quam Chep" (land of the berries) in the Chippewa language. According to the 2010 census, the city has a population of 4,000.

The Ely Chamber of Commerce is located in the log building, which was built in 1928 when it served as the bunkhouse for the Wilderness Research Foundation located on Basswood Lake. IT was disassembled and moved to this location-donated by the Foundation's founder Frank Hubachek.
