Zwiedzając Terenowy Ośrodek Edukacyjny mamy okazję poznać nie tylko przyrodę tego fragmentu Biebrzy, ale również jego historię. Przed nami, w kierunku północnym widać ruiny Fortu II XIX – wiecznej Twierdzy Osowiec. Koncepcja budowy Fortu II na prawym brzegu Biebrzy, zwanego Zarzecznym powstała w trakcie końcowych prac nad wznoszeniem Fortu Zaporowego „Osowiec”. Fort ten miał poprawić obronność ponieważ umożliwiał działania własnych wojsk na obu brzegach rzeki, ponadto mógł stanowić punkt wyjścia do działać w kierunku Prus Wschodnich. Oprócz tego zadanie Fortu była kontrola nad szosą i linią kolejową oraz flankowanie prawego brzegu rzeki, głównie przeprawy promowej pod Goniądzem i grobli we wsi Sośnia. Fort Zarzeczny zbudowany był na planie pięcioboku z dwoma wałami i mokrym rowem fortecznym. W czole i na załamaniach frontu fortu były platformy artyleryjskie do obrony rowu a wewnątrz fortu koszary obronne, zbudowane równoległe do siebie. Z zewnątrz do fortu prowadziły dwa mosty przez fosę w szyi fortu. Garnizon składał się z kompanii piechoty fortecznej, pododdziału artylerii i saperów.

Visiting Field Education Centre we have an occasion to meet not only nature of that fragment of the Biebrza Valley, but also the history of the region. In front of us, to the North, we can catch a glimpse of the ruins of the Fort II of the Tsarish Fortress – Osowiec built in the 19 –th century. A conception of the Fort II on the right bank of the Biebrza River, arose in the time of last works with the erection of the Barrage Fort “Osowiec”. That fort was to improve the defensive system because made it possible to carry out military operations of fortress on both banks of the river. Besides it could be starting point for military operations towards Prussia. Apart from that, the task of the fort was the road and the railway control and the role of a flank on the right bank, and particularly for ferry crossing Goniadz ad a dam running from Sosnia village. The fort was built in the frame of pentagon, with two ramparts and a wet fort ditch. To protect the ditch there were built artillery platforms in the forefront and on all bends of the fort. Inside the fort there were fortified barracks situated parallel to each other. From outside it was possible to get to the fort over two bridges across the moat, in the neck of the fort. The garrison consisted of a fort infantry company, an artillery squad and sappers.
