Geocache Description:

This cache is one of a series placed in a loop starting and finishing in Kirkby Stephen and going clockwise via Great Musgrave, Brough and Winton. Although the whole loop (approximately 15 miles and 1000 feet of ascent) may be completed on foot this is not advised as the small country roads are surprisingly busy and do not make for comfortable or safe walking.

Kirkby Stephen is a small market town in Cumbria. The town is located on the A685, surrounded by sparsely populated hill country, and about 25 miles from the nearest larger towns, Kendal and Penrith. The town has many cafes, pubs and fish & chips shops for refreshment and there is a large (free) car park situated in Silver Street 100 yards from the town centre where there are public toilets and a TIC (limited winter opening hours). Great Musgrave, a small village with no facilities but an attractive church by the River Eden. Brough, Some on street parking, there are public toilets, pubs, a cafe and a fish & chip shop (with limited opening). Church Brough, a small village just across the A66 from it’s larger neighbour Brough. There is a castle, a church and an ice cream parlour (check for winter opening hours) . Some short term parking. Winton, another small village this time with a pub which serves very good food.

The route is best followed on bicycles, if you do not bring your own they are available for hire in Kirkby Stephen, electric bikes are also available. Information on food, accommodation and cycle hire is available from Kirkby Stephen TIC. If you follow this route in a car, to park safely, you may have to leave it a little distance from some of the caches. Long term car parking is available free in Kirkby Stephen and cars can be parked on road in Brough. Please do not park long term in Church Brough as the limited parking is intended for residents. Please do not block field gates or farm access roads.

Some caches contain a log and pencil, some are also large enough for small swaps and Trackables. Many of the smaller caches do not have room for a pencil, please bring your own. I would also suggest that you may need a torch, tweezers and protective gloves.
