Geocache Description:

Glasheen (Irish: An Glaisín) is a suburb in south central Cork city in Ireland. The area earned its name from the stream that flows through it, under the Glasheen Road (Glasheen means small stream in Irish). The Bishopstown section of the Glasheen River flows west to east along the Bandon Road, passing the viaduct and fronting the estates Brampton Court / Tiffany Downs / Stratton Pines / Woodhaven/ Woodbrook / Donscourt / Sth. Bishopscourt / Cardinal Court. So many people from the greater Bishopstown and beyond treasure it’s walking, jogging and leisure facilitaties in the midst of a bussling, gridlocked Bishopstown.

Cork, Bandon and South Coast Railway (CB&SCR), was an Irish gauge (1,600 mm) railway in Ireland. It opened in 1849 as the Cork and Bandon Railway, changed its name to Cork Bandon and South Coast Railway in 1888 and became part of the Great Southern Railway in 1924. The CB&SCR served the south coast of County Cork between Cork and Bantry. It had a route length of 94 miles (151 km), all of it single track. Many road car routes connected with the line, including the route from Bantry to Killarney. It ran along here under the route of the N40 (South Link Road) very close to this Geocache-trail on the pathway along the Glasheen river on its way to Waterfall (about 9mins by train from Kent Station at the time - how the locals would love this now!). When I played here on the swampland as a kid in the 80’s you could still see the rails, but the development of the N40 in the early 1990’s ripped them up (you can see the odd monument to these tracks at the Kinsale Road roundabout, and on the Ballincollig bypass). This trail is hidden in the paygounnd of my youth!

This Geocache-trail will bring you along about 1.3km of the route (surfaced pathway) and potentially boost your profile with 4 new caches. They were Christmas presents from the Aunties and Uncles in 2017, and they are tricky! There are four caches along the walk, the containers all connected by a theme. This is the second of four in the series, though probably not if you park at the recommended waypoint. Have you noticed the theme yet?

BYOP and a tweezers (hopeless without it!)
