Geocache Description:

NOTICE – This Letterbox-Hybrid available during LIMITED HOURS . . . . see below.

This cache is part of a series of caches dedicated to the reminiscence and admiration of Roseville’s early dwellers.  It is part of a series of caches called:  “CACHE OUT IN ROSEVILLE”

This building is now the home of the Roseville Historical Society’s museum.   But before that, it was one of many Carnegie Libraries throughout the world.  As Roseville’s population began to grow in the early 1900’s, residents identified a need for library services.   A group of boosters formed a committee in 1911 and approached the foundation of industrialist and steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish-American businessman and philanthropist.  Carnegie believed that immigrants (like himself) could work their way into a position of merit, success, and wealth.  Having access to books was a big part of his life and he wanted others to acquire the knowledge to improve themselves.  Nearly all of the Carnegie libraries required matching contributions from the town.   The town also had to demonstrate a need for a public library, provide the building site, and provide free service to all.   The grant for Roseville’s share of the library was $10,000.  This library was finished in 1912 and served the needs of Roseville’s citizens until 1979.   There were 2,509 such libraries funded between 1883 and 1929 throughout the world. Very few towns that requested a grant and agreed to Carnegie’s terms were refused. (“The Press Tribune – “Centennial Celebration” – 2009)

The beginning coordinates take you to the front steps.   Cache is inside the museum.   Hours are:  Tuesdays thru Fridays . . .  noon thru 4 pm.   It is also open on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 10 AM to 2 PM.  Tours are also available by appointment – (916) 773-3003.  There is a train related surprise just as you enter the front doors.  There are wonderful model trains to see.  Lots and lots of memorabilia from yesteryear to admire.    Tons of Roseville memories.  Admission is free – donations gladly accepted.   The Roseville Historical Society also meets here once a month.
