Geocache Description:

Deck of Cards Series

I do not save the log sheets from this series. If a log sheet is wet or missing, please feel free to replace it. Thanks.

There are a lot of great caches in Galena. Unfortunately there is limited room for more. But we need more caches for our visitors. My answer is to surround Galena with caches. Project GC tracks caches found by owner. I am working on finding 100 caches from each of 20 owners. I think it is only fair that I have 100 caches for them to find. I need about 50 more hides to end up with over 100 active caches. What is a number around 50? 52 - a Deck of Cards!

I will place caches 4 at a time. I will try to add interesting information about each. All the history in Galena is not in town. I hope you enjoy this series.

The Face cards are all located between US Rte 20 and the Mississippi River southeast of Galena. Notice that the roads are hillier near the river. East Galena and Rice Townships are where my German ancestors settled. Actually they were from Prussia back before Germany was formed.

The Jacks are located along N Irish Hollow Road. The Irish miners arrived in the Galena Area before the German farmers.

The  Jack of Diamonds  is located at the intersection of S Irish Hollow Road and W Cemetery Road. Cemetery Road is a little over a half mile long. It connects S Irish Hollow Road and S Rocky Hill Road. Yes, we have crossed the line from North to South. If you find the roads confusing in Jo Daviess County, so do I. They chose a center point for the county of Lat 42 22' 30" and Long 90 13' 20". Everything north of that point is N and south is S. Same with East and West. Addresses are assigned by how far they are from the line. This makes for a mess. Blackjack Road is a good example. On South Blackjack Road there is a section that turns east and west. All the houses on that section would have nearly identical addresses. So ..... They made a section of W Blackjack Road to get different addresses. Then once the turn south is reached the road again becomes S Blackjack Road and the addresses resume. Try explaining that to Online Maps. I did and one doesn't believe me. That is why all of S Blackjack Road is named W Blackjack Road on one Map.
