A little-known episode in American history was the transportation of some 425,000 German POWs to more than 500 camps throughout the country. A fair number of them were brought to California to work on the farms and in the fields to replace farmhands who were fighting overseas.
Not all of them were able to go home when the war was over, however. In a quiet corner of the Benicia Army Cemetary lie the remains of eight Germans who died while in custody in nearby camps. These men were buried as far as possible from the other graves - they were 'the enemy.'
Your task is to find these graves and e-mail me with a description of their layout. I'll know you've found this virtual cache if you can tell me how many graves are in each row. Just describe the German graves, not the others.
As a bonus, not far from the German graves, you'll find the graves of two Army dogs, including Tuffy, the only dog ever court-martialed by the US Army, and Duke, a horse. I used to be able to send along a link to Tuffy's story, but, sadly, the info has disappeared.

This cemetery is only open to the public from 9 am to 4 pm on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Plan accordingly.
