Geocache Description:

This cache features an old tennis court,aBMX track,a water reservoir and a little Invercargill history, all in Myer's Reserve.

Myer's Reserve was the site of a brickworks operated by C Myers & sons from the 1860s until the operation ceased in 1959. Clay from the reserve was used and the resulting hollow in the ground was later utilised in the construction of a water reservoir. The kiln with its smokestack was a prominent landmark for many years.
The reservoir, with a capacity of 45000 cubic meters was completed in 1965. Water for the city is taken from the Oreti river and pumped to a treatment station for sand filtration and the addition of Chlorine and Fluoride. Itis then pumped to one of 6 reservoirs and then on to the 400+km. of pipe reticulation leading to our household taps.
The tennis court was used up until the mid 1970's, but was never all that popular and abandoned as alternatives became available. Perhaps the thought of all that water put players off their strokes. The last time I was here the court markings were still visible, but seem to be gone now.
The BMX club approached the council in1982 to build a track and this eventually happened. I don't know how much it is used. Not a soul there when I visited.
The cache is a 1 litre screw top jar .and you will find it 161 m. from the given coords. at a bearing of 111 degrees true. There are a few starting swaps.
There is plenty of parking at the site.
