This walk will lead you to one of the best lookouts over Rotorua, and the only Free view of the World Famous Pohutu Geyser and the Whakarewarewa village. It erupts up to 30m high about 20 times per day, so bring a picnic and you may catch it in the act while you eat!
The only price to pay for this view is a 30-40 minute walk up a gradual incline. The cache is a Big Black Bucket hidden a short distance from the track and about 200m from the lookout. When it was hidden it was the only cache in the area. At the time of hiding the scrub had been cut down and there was nowhere safe to hide such a large container closer to the lookout. To get there I recommend you park at the Redwoods Visitor Centre on Long Mile Road (coordinates supplied). There you can familiarize yourself with a map of the forest, or even purchase one. Follow the yellow arrows of the Pohaturoa track. This will take you through a stunning stand of california redwoods before joining Nursery Rd and Radio Hut Rd to the lookout. Once there you can turn back the way you came or finish the entire Pohaturoa loop (2-2.5h). There are now several caches along this walking trail and you will probably need over 3h to find them all (see bookmark list on this cache page). Locals will also know how to get there from the Waipa mountain bike carpark (hard left past the bridge then left again).
