New Haw lock is on the Wey Navigation which links Godalming to London. The lock and lock keepers cottage are managed by the National Trust.
The New Haw lock keeper’s cottage was said by Tiny Harris, who was lock keeper there from 1959 until 1982, to be haunted. The ghost was a previous keeper’s wife who had drowned in the water cut behind the lock. She appeared in a long shapeless stinking mist that passed through the kitchen at the back of the cottage. Such was the cold and stench of the mist when it appeared that Harris’ wife fainted and collapsed when she witnessed it. Whether it was the stench or the ghost was never determined.

This has changed since I was last here and not for the better. There are a lot of loose small branches lying around and no longer a short track from the road to the canal. I could not find the original 6cm square small cliplock box and have replaced it with something else. If by chance you should find it first thats fine, but please could you let me know and leave it low down. With thanks
