Maungakakaramea (Rotorua) Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

GenCuster: I suspect the cache was thrown into the pool. It was about the right size and shape to make it attractive to a muggle for that purpose, something I’d never thought of, being a cacher & all. But a log is a log, is a log...

Archived as I’m disabled. ‘nuff said.

Geocache Description:

The cache is near the base of Rainbow Mountain (Maungakakaramea) as a 'teaser' for those unwilling or unable to achieve the Rainbow Mountain cache.

Maungakakaramea is an extinct dacite volcano on the Northern edge of the Waiotapu area. It has significance in botanical and scientific terms as it contains complex mixtures of plant species - some of which are unique in geothermal areas. See Destination Outdoors for additional information about this area.

The cache is placed at a lookout with information on the geological and botanical features of the area and overlooks what is known as the 'crater lakes'. It is a 10-15 minute walk through various vegetation strata to the cache site.

The 2l camouflaged cache systema container itself is one of a series that I created for the 'Discover Geocaching for Interpretation' Seminar I co-presented with Wiliam Bevil from the Department of Conservation at the "Some Like it Hot" National Intrepretation Conference in Rotorua on 15-18 September 2009.

The cache location was averaged for 5 minutes using a Garmin Oregon 300. It contains a log, pen, assorted trading items, a travel bug and a FTF prize (FTF Pin).

Stealth and patience may be required to retrieve / replace the cache as visitors are frequent and sudden!

EDIT: 23 Jan 2019 Cache container replaced with a natural object. It is easy to 'log'. It cannot hold trackables.

The cache is placed in a geothermal environment. Heed any signposted warnings. Stay on the well formed tracks and viewing platform. There is absolutely no need at any time to leave the track, either enroute to, or retrieving the cache. Lock your car and don't leave valuables visible.

*** PLEASE REPLACE THE CACHE AS FOUND AFTER SIGNING THE LOG. THANK YOU. ***
