Griffith J. Griffith
Griffith Park is one of the largest urban parks in the United States. Most of the land was donated to the city by Griffith P. Griffith as a Christmas gift to the city on December 16, 1896. Not only did he donate the land for the park, but he also donated the funds to build the park's Greek Theatre and the Griffith Observatory.
Griffith was a 14-year old Welsh immigrant in New York City in 1866, without money, education, or family. By 1882, he was rich and living in Los Angeles. He must have been quite a character--described as "a midget egomaniac" and "a roly-poly, pompous little fellow."
The cache site is just north of the 14-foot bronze monument honoring Griffith J. Griffith. Grab the cache and enjoy the park. When the cache was placed, there were about 40 active caches in the park. There are now many, many more.
