Geocache Description:

The Gnome Trail is a 3.5 km/2.2 mile circular walk near Hooton, Cheshire. It is primarily on unlit country lanes, many without pavements, but there is a short stretch on a busy road that has a pavement.

Although most of the route is on quiet country lanes, this is not advised as a drive-by series as parking is limited. There are pull-ins along the route but it may be necessary to walk to the caches from the nearest parking places. It is dangerous to stop at GT-5, so please park in one of the smaller country lanes and walk to the cache. Extra care will be needed with geo-kids and geo-dogs owing to most of the country lanes having no pavements. It’s also not advised to walk the trail in darkness as the lanes are until.

The route starts at The Hooton, next to Hooton Railway station. First, collect the information for the first cache in the series, GT-1 – the multi. Do the simple calculations and you’ll then know where the cache is hidden on the circuit. Head down Waterworks Lane between the pub and railway station. If you haven’t already found “Bahá'í Garden” (GC2PP8F), then you can complete this short multi near where the lane turns into Oakfield Road.

Stay on Oakfield Road (it turns right) to the end where it meets Heath Lane. The route turns left and follows this lane until it meets the mail Welsh Road. (You may want to park on here, or later in School Lane for the walk to GT-5). Turn left on the very busy Welsh Road, and then after a further 250m, left again into School Lane.

Follow School Lane to the end where there is another old cache from 2010 – “Hoo-10 ~ Happy Birthday Geocaching!” (GC2F23K). Turn left on Hooton Road and this leads back to the start of the trail passing the start of another multicache “Mr Donut's 200th Milestone” (GC260WK) before the end of the walk and the final cache of the Wirral Way series, “WWay80 – Not On The Wirral Way!!!” (GC46M8Q) opposite the pub.

There are other caches close to this route that could be found on the walk with small diversions. In addition, for those who like puzzle caches, the route passes “Lady Laugh-A-Lot's Sudoku” (GC41N39), but you’ll need to have solved the puzzle in advance!
