The site
Krosshaug (literally "cross mound") is the remains of a burial
mound dating back to ca. 450AD, and it originally measured around
30 metres across and 5-6 metres high. In the late 19th century
farmers started using the earth from the mound, eventually
uncovering the stone cairn, and then used the stones for
constructing fences around the fields.
Eventually they discovered the grave itself under large stone
slabs covering a burial chamber. In the chamber the remains of a
woman was found in an oak coffin, along with several pieces of
jewelry and utensils in gold, silver, brass, glass and ceramics.
She had clearly been someone belonging to the "upper class" -
perhaps the widow of a local chieftain. Several objects seem to
come from central Europe and France/Belgium.
The remains of the mound and the opened burial chamber now
appears as it was left after it was opened in 1869. In the
south-east corner are the remains of a German bunker from WW2
The stone cross was probably placed there around the 11th
century, at the time when Norway became a christian nation. It was
damaged during the midsummer celebration in 1855, but repaired and
reerected in 1937.
The cache
The cache consists of a medium-sized (1 litre), clear plastic
box, hidden a short distance to the south of the cross.
Remember that the site is protected by law.
Please approach from the car park and not via
the closest road on the map, since that road is a private farm
road. As the area between the car park and the cross can get quite
soggy after a wet spell, you may want to bring appropriate footwear
(though trainers are usually sufficient if you choose your route
carefully - stay close to the stone fence)...

Cachen
Cachen er gjemt litt sør for steinkorset, og består av en medium
(1 liter), gjennomsiktig plastboks.
Vennligst start fra parkeringsplassen og ikke veien som er
nærmest på kartet, da det er en privat gårdsvei. Da det fort blir
ganske vått i bakken i området mellom parkeringsplassen og korset
bør en sko seg deretter (men joggesko er som regel OK om en velger
rute med omhu - følg steingjerdet)...
