A short off set multi cache in and around “The Church on the Roundabout”
St Thomas’s Holy Trinity Church Trowbridge was planned when it was realised that the existing parish church in the town could barely hold a twelfth of the 12000 population of the day. Fund raising appeals and a grant from the Church Building Commissioners raised the £6500 to allow construction to start in 1837. So important was this to the people of the parish over 7000 attended the laying of the foundation stone.
The church served the community well but it was only 60 years or so later that the first signs of cracking were detected in the cheap and poor quality materials used in its construction. Many refurbishments have taken place since the beginning of the 1900s to maintain the church in its present condition.
You may observe that the church is unusually built on a more north east / south west orientation rather than the normal east / west.
The development of the Trowbridge inner relief road in the 1970s effectively isolated the church as seen today giving it the local nickname of “The Church on the Roundabout”.
Start at the listed co ordinates. You will find yourself at a doubled gated entrance. Looking at one half of the double gates, how many horizontal bars are there at around waist height? = A
