Geocache Description:

This Lagoon is a man-made feature created by hotel builder Henry J. Kaiser in the early 1950s and has been named after "The Duke". It has just been completely renovated and preserved for the public to enjoy.

Duke Kahanamoku was born and raised in Waikiki and was a full-blooded Hawaiian and represented the culture to millions of people. He was reknown to everyone as the "Hawaiian Ambassador of Aloha".
.

During his lifetime, "The Duke" was a movie actor, political figure, and a true hero, not to mention an Olympic Champion winning three gold, two silver, and one bronze metal in four Olympics between 1912 and 1922. He is also recognized as the Father of International Surfing having introduced the sport to the Eastern seaboard and later around the World.

Duke was a descendant of Hawaiian royalty. And, although not a Duke, his achievements in swimming and surfing, along with his good looks and unaffected charm, brought him the attention and admiration of royalty and a nine-year career in Hollywood. He appeared in about 30 movies and, although some were very minor roles, his career bridged the old silent movies and the "talkies." By nature, he was more suited to the silent movie. Duke never capitalized on his fame and was always gracious.

Duke was most at home in Hawaii, among his family and friends and close to the ocean he loved. He spoke Hawaiian, he loved hula and he embodied Hawaii's spirit of aloha. He was also sheriff for the City and County of Honolulu for 26 years and loved his job.

On January 22, 1968 the world would bid "Aloha " to Hawaii's most famous citizen. He would be remembered as a great swimmer, surfer and all-around good guy. Its been almost 38-years after his death, memories of his achievements and affecting personable style still lingers to this day.
