Geocache Description:

This cache is placed along the Richmond Slave Trail in Ancarrow Landing.

This trail will take you from this site along the river and into the heart of Shockhoe bottom. Estabilished in 2011, the walking path chronicles the history of the trade in enslaved Africans from their homeland to Virginia until 1778 and away from Virginia, and Richmond to other locations in the Americas until 1865. Beginning at Manchester Docks, which along with Rocketts Landing on the north side of the river, operated as a mahor port in the massive downriver slave trade. From 1830-1860 Richmond was the largerst source of enslaved blacks on the east coast of aAMerica. While many of the slaves were shipped on to New Orleans and to other Deep South ports, the trail follows the footsteps of thise who remained here and crossed the James River, often chained together.

Once reaching the northern river bank, the trail then leads to sites of former slave markets and auction houses of Richmond. The Reconciliation Statue located along the trail commerates the international triangular slcave trade. The trail also passes  the site of the notorious Lumpkin's Slave jail and leads to Richmond's African Burial Ground for Negroes and the First African Baptist Church.
