Geocache Description:

Head onto the beach to grab this cache which forms part of the Shipwreck Series. For the series methodology and more info visit SS: Shipwreck Series via the related web page link.

This was a British whaling barque of 350 tons, built in 1809 in Philadelphia, and commanded by Capt Lawrence. She was wrecked on Muizenberg beach on 27 July 1839 while entering False Bay with a cargo of 1039 barrels of sperm-whale oil, which was saved. No lives were lost among the 80 crew.

Other vessels to end up somewhere along Muizenberg beach include:

HM Schooner Cockburn, 3 April 1823. Cables parted during a south-east gale after a voyage from Delagoa Bay to Simon's Bay. No lives lost.
Felix Vincidor, 28 July 1841. Run ashore at night while on a voyage from St. Catherines on Lake Ontario to Simon's Bay with wine and spirits. No lives lost.
40 gun frigate, La Penelope, 16 October 1788. Cargo of military supplies. Most of her crew were saved.
The brig, La Camille, 18 October 1836. Returning from Reunion with sugar, coffee, nutmegs, closes and tortoise-shell. No lives lost.
the whaler, Le Protie, 10 January 1839. Returning from Nantes with whale-oil on board. No lives lost.
Padang, 29 June 1828. Wrecked at 22h00 while on a voyage from Padang, Sumatra, to Antwerp with coffee and spices. No lives lost.
A Prussian barque, Johanna Wagner, 17 July 1862. From Batavia to Amsterdam with sugar, gall-nuts, india-rubber, tobacco and tin. No lives lost.
