Welcome to Answer Creek Crossing - where Castor Canadensis (the
American Beaver) can be observed building a pond where none existed
before.
Park in the narrow dirt pulloff just northeast of the Talkeetna
Spur Highway's crossing of Answer Creek. The cache is located a
short scramble up the grassy hillside inside the treeline, on the
east side of the highway (don't trust the map on this cache
page!). Exercise care - the ground can be wet at times!
With the recent decline in fur prices it's not uncommon to see
beavers at work in streams and ponds all along Alaska's highway
system. I've hunted moose for many years along the upper stretches
of this small stream where it flows down from the Talkeetna
Mountains, and it seems lately there's a beaver dam around every
corner. Here's a chance for you to see their handiwork without
hardly leaving the pavement!
