Every day a little bit of our history is lost. With this geocache, I wanted to keep a small bit of it alive. I grew up working on the farm just east of here, and wanted to share a bit of the history of the “Jimtown Store”. See the waypoint for the actual location of store.
While I was working on the farm in the late 80’s and early 90’s Jimtown was operated by Robert Denton Smith aka “Bobby Dent”, but before him his father Denton Smith ran the store since the 1890’s. Dropping by here was like stepping back in history to the early 1900’s. This was the little shop that time had forgotten and decades hadn’t changed. Looking from the road, there were rock steps to climb to get to the porch which had a coal box stocked for the upcoming winter. In the windows of the store front hung the 1950’s “Fresh with 7up” signs and the 7up decals of every young person who bought a bottle of pop at the store.
Whenever you stopped at the Jimtown store, you knew that Bobby would meet you at the door in his denim cap and long denim coat (didn’t matter if it was 90 degrees or 19 degrees outside) to greet you with the words “Oh, come in, we have pop and candy bars.” The selection of merchandise didn’t number in the thousands of items, or even hundreds. The selection was probably closer to 10 choices, including 7up, Dr. Pepper, Hersheys, Snickers, Reeses Peanut Butter Cups, and Twix along with licorice and tootsie rolls. Occasionally there would be soap and bread as well.
The store was heated by a pot belly stove, and there were kerosene lamps to light the building. Outside the store was parked Bobby’s Model A Ford which he took out for a spin a few times a week. I believe this was also one of the last permitted working outhouses in Dane County as well.
